Poco X6 review: A solid choice

The Android 13.0 operating system powers this smartphone, which comes equipped with 8 GB of RAM. With dimensions measuring 17.9 x 8.9 x 7.1 cm and a weight of 530 grams, the device is compact and portable. It operates on a lithium polymer battery with a power rating of 5100 Milliamp Hours, ensuring long-lasting usage. The Mirror Black color adds a touch of elegance to its touchscreen bar form factor. The phone features both front and rear cameras, providing versatility for capturing moments. Manufactured by Xiaomi Technology India Pvt. Ltd., this device is proudly made in India. In the package, you'll find an adapter to facilitate charging. The wireless display feature enhances user convenience, making it a comprehensive and reliable smartphone.

The Poco X6 has truly made its mark as an exceptional smartphone within its segment. While no device is flawless, this phone comes remarkably close, showcasing a commendable performance. The vibrant AMOLED display captivates with its brilliance, complemented by a long-lasting battery that ensures sustained usage. The camera, while decent, contributes to the overall appeal, and the phone's design is nothing short of amazing. What sets the Poco X6 apart is its competitive pricing, starting at Rs 19,999. The tempting proposition is further justified by features typically found in premium devices. Having extensively used the Poco X6 for several weeks, my satisfaction is evident. Notably, the design and display have left a lasting impression, and I'll delve into these aspects shortly. In comparison to its predecessor, the Poco X5, the X6 brings noteworthy enhancements in display quality, chipset performance, camera capabilities, and fast charging capabilities. Join me as we explore these improvements in detail in this comprehensive review.

Design and Display:

The Poco X6 immediately captures attention with its remarkably lightweight design, weighing in at just 181 grams. To put this in perspective, it's lighter than common items like a one-liter water bottle, a pair of shoes, or even a standard mug. The phone boasts a sleek, square-ish design with a flat display, and the variant in white features a reflective marble-like finish coupled with a glossy texture. The signature Poco design is prominent on the back, housing the protruding cameras on the left and the Poco logo on the right, all within a black rectangle. While the design is aesthetically pleasing, the glossy finish can make the phone a bit slippery, easily remedied with the provided case.

Moving to the front, the Poco X6 showcases a neat layout with noticeable bezels around the display that manages to maintain a sleek appearance. The phone incorporates a floating camera on top, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, a Type-C charging port, a 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers, and an IR blaster. The glossy finish may pose a slight challenge in terms of grip, but this is efficiently addressed with the included case.

The display is a standout feature, sporting a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1220p and an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. An affordable option that supports Dolby Vision, the Poco X6 also boasts HDR10+. The 1920Hz PWM dimming is a thoughtful addition, minimizing the likelihood of flickering, a factor that can lead to eye strain or discomfort. The colors on the display are vibrant, responsive, and accompanied by fast animations. The incorporation of HDR10+ and Dolby Vision enhances the video-watching experience, ensuring vivid colors, lag-free performance, and sufficiently loudspeakers for an enjoyable multimedia experience.

UI and Battery:

In terms of performance, the Poco X6 impressed me with its smooth and lag-free experience. Powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset and equipped with up to 8 GB of RAM, the device handled various tasks effortlessly. While it falls slightly behind the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 and the original Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, it's a notable improvement over the Poco X5's Snapdragon 695 SoC. Benchmark tests confirmed its capability for handling medium to heavy tasks, and my personal experience, including playing demanding games like Asphalt 9, showcased solid performance without frame drops or lags.

The user interface, MIUI 14, delivered a familiar yet responsive experience, maintaining consistency with its predecessor MIUI 13.

Camera Function:

In my initial assessment of the Poco X6, I pointed out its imperfections, particularly in terms of performance gaps. Turning to the camera capabilities, the smartphone excels in well-lit environments, delivering decent pictures. However, challenges arise when attempting to capture images in low-light conditions. Notably, there's a noticeable loss of details, and the images appear washed out. Even with the assistance of AI-driven night mode, the results exhibit artificial lighting, accompanied by a soft focus and a general haziness.

When it comes to shooting videos, the Poco X6 surprisingly maintains stability, although low-light settings do compromise some details. The sharpness of videos is not as pronounced in well-lit scenarios, but the overall quality remains acceptable. A specific example is an image shot in night mode, showcasing vibrant hues of yellow, orange, and red in the fire. However, upon zooming in, the lack of sharpness becomes evident.

Similarly, in an image featuring my cat, the colors are generally accurate and true to life. Yet, the absence of a sharp focus on the cat or other objects within the image is apparent. Nevertheless, in a well-lit scenario, as observed in a picture of my ginger cat, where ample light illuminates his face, the camera manages to retain a commendable level of detail and color accuracy.

Whether the Poco X6 Be or not?

The Poco X6 and Redmi Note 13 Pro are direct competitors, with the latter boasting a superior 200 MP camera. Despite the camera performance advantage, the Poco X6 stands out for its more affordable pricing, starting at Rs 19,999 for the 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variant, and reaching Rs 22,999 for the 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage model. In contrast, the Redmi Note 13 Pro is priced higher, starting at Rs 23,999 for the 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage version, and going up to Rs 27,999 for the 12 GB RAM and 256 GB option. The significant price difference of Rs 4,000 for the base variant and Rs 5,000 for the top variant makes the Poco X6 a more cost-effective choice, providing well-rounded performance unless one prioritizes camera-centric features and is willing to invest extra.
